Errata for Ranking the First Ladies

Errata (not updates) for Ranking the First Ladies: True Tales and Trivia, from Martha Washington to Michelle Obama by Ian Randal Strock (Carrel Books, ISBN: 978-1-63144-058-8)

Chapter 45, “Eisenhower and Nixon, the Only Marriage Uniting Two Presidential Families”, page 168. The first paragraph says the three children of David and Julie Eisenhower, plus their three grandchildren, are the only six people to have ancestors in both their maternal and paternal lines who were President of the United States. Actually, the grandchildren only have multiple Presidents on one side of their lineage.

Chapter 51, “The Senior Presidential Child”, page 180. The chart shows that, upon Esther Cleveland Bosanquet’s death, Helen Herron Taft Manning became the Senior Presidential Child on June 26, 1980. I neglected Esther’s youngest brother, Francis Grover Cleveland, who was born on July 18, 1903 (six years after his father left office for the last time). Francis died on November 8, 1995 (after Helen), at which time Elizabeth Ann Britton (Warren Harding’s illegitimate daughter) became the Senior Presidential Child. The paragraph preceding the chart says that only 19 people have been the Senior Presidential Child, which remains true. It also says that 12 Presidents have been the father of the Senior Presidential Child, which is now incorrect: dropping Helen Herron Taft Manning from the list in favor of Francis Grover Cleveland means only 11 Presidents have been the father of the Senior Presidential Child.
